Overview
The MTech in Structural Engineering program was introduced in 2013 with an initial intake of 18 students under Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), which was subsequently increased to 24. Since 2025, the program has been offered under Nitte (Deemed to be University) with an approved intake of 24 students.
The program features an industry and research oriented curriculum that equips students with advanced knowledge in structural analysis, design and construction technologies. The Department has been a recognized Research Centre under VTU since 2013 with permanent affiliation and has also been recognized as a Research Centre under Nitte (Deemed to be University) since 2025, providing an excellent platform for advanced research and innovation.
State of the Art Laboratory Facilities
The department is equipped with modern laboratories that support advanced learning, research and consultancy.
- 2000 kN Loading Frame with 2000 kN and 1000 kN hydraulic jacks, along with a 200 kN lateral loading jack and automatic data acquisition system for testing full scale structural members.
- 3000 kN Digital Compression Testing Machine (CTM) for testing ultra high performance concrete.
- Advanced Non Destructive Testing (NDT) equipment, including Rebound Hammer, Profometer (Rebar Locator) and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) equipment for structural evaluation.
- Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Fatigue Fracture Testing Machine for advanced material characterization and structural member analysis.
Structural Dynamics Laboratory
- Earthquake simulation Shake Table for evaluating the behavior of structures under seismic loading.
- Twelve experimental setups for understanding structural dynamics and vibration related phenomena.
Computer Aided Design Laboratory
- Hands-on training in industry standard licensed software, including STAAD.Pro, ETABS, ANSYS, Autodesk Revit Structures and MATLAB, with AI integrated design applications.
Industry Integrated Learning
The department is supported by highly qualified faculty, predominantly PhD holders, who are actively involved in postgraduate teaching, research and consultancy. The academic structure comprises two semesters of coursework followed by a 4 to 6 month industry internship with leading structural design organizations during the third semester. The final semester is dedicated to dissertation work, enabling students to apply their knowledge to real world engineering challenges.
Students benefit from regular interactions with industry experts through seminars, workshops and guest lectures, while site visits and participation in consultancy projects provide valuable practical exposure. This comprehensive learning approach ensures graduates are well prepared for careers in structural engineering, research and higher studies.
