Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) represents a vital intellectual axis within contemporary technical education. Established as an independent department in 2025, HSS reflects the institution’s deliberate and forward-looking commitment to integrating humanistic, ethical, linguistic and social inquiry into the core of scientific and technological learning.

Drawing upon scholars trained across diverse disciplinary traditions, methodologies and epistemological frameworks, the department functions not merely as a support or service unit but as a generative intellectual space. Here, knowledge is critically examined, produced and recontextualised through sustained interdisciplinary engagement. By bridging engineering with the humanities and social sciences, the department affirms that technical excellence is amplified not diluted by humanistic insight.

The Department of HSS plays a central role in the Institute’s academic mission, delivering a substantial and strategically designed component of the undergraduate curriculum. A significant portion is anchored in the humanities and social sciences, reflecting the conviction that technical proficiency must be complemented by analytical rigor, ethical awareness, effective communication and social responsibility. The Department equips students with essential intellectual tools to:

  • Analyse complex, real-world problems
  • Communicate ideas with clarity and precision
  • Exercise ethical judgment and leadership
  • Engage responsibly with societal and global challenges

All programmes and courses are aligned with NEP 2020, emphasizing critical thinking, emotional intelligence, professionalism, cultural literacy, and lifelong learning.

The department offers a diverse and carefully curated range of courses, including:

  • Professional Communication
  • Communicative English
  • Kannada Language & Balake Kannada
  • Universal Human Values (UHV) and Professional Ethics
  • Constitution of India and Global Citizenship
  • Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS)

These courses foster ethical decision-making, civic consciousness, leadership qualities and a deep appreciation of India’s constitutional, cultural and knowledge traditions—essential attributes for responsible engineers and global citizens.

To support students from diverse linguistic backgrounds, HSS offers Bridge Courses and Special Language Support Classes in English and Kannada. The English Language Laboratory, equipped with advanced learning software, enhances Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing (LSRW) skills through experiential and interactive methods.

The Department also conducts the STEPS Programme (Skill Training for Effective Professional Speaking), focusing on spoken English, public speaking, group discussions, interview readiness and professional etiquette through activity-based learning.

The Department of HSS is deeply committed to the holistic development of future engineers by fostering ethical values, social sensitivity, critical inquiry and reflective thinking. Faculty members actively engage in:

  • Innovative teaching-learning practices
  • Skill-development and mentoring initiatives
  • Value-based and experiential learning strategies

Through continuous academic support and student engagement, the department ensures that graduates emerge not only as technically competent professionals but also as reflective practitioners capable of anticipating long-term consequences, exercising ethical leadership and responding creatively to the grand challenges of our time.
