The Department of Civil Engineering at NMIT was established to provide quality education with the best guidance, facilities, and opportunities for students to cater for the needs of society. It initially started with 60 students in the academic year 2009-10. It also offers a Master of Technology (M.Tech) programme in Structural Engineering. The department is a recognized research centre under VTU, Belagavi. UG program (B.Tech) is NBA accredited consecutively 3 times and is accredited till the academic year 2026.
The Department of Civil Engineering is among the top Civil Engineering departments in institutions across and around Bangalore. The well-qualified faculty members are specialized in different fields of Civil Engineering. The Department also has well-equipped laboratories. To name a few: Geo-Technical Engineering Laboratory, Concrete and Highway Engineering Laboratory, Environment Engineering Laboratory, Geology Laboratory, Survey Practice Laboratory, CADD Laboratory, and the Hydraulic and Hydraulic Machines Laboratory. Additionally, the department has a Structural Engineering Laboratory for postgraduate students, featuring a sophisticated 2000 kN capacity Loading Frame with an automatic data acquisition system for testing full-scale beams, columns, slabs and frames and a shake table with an automatic data acquisition system. The department also has a unique Supreme Skill and Knowledge Centre with state-of-the-art facilities enabling advanced training on plumbing, drainage and water management systems. The department maintains extensive and robust industry-institute interactions through various Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).
The department is also very active in facilitating its students to real-world problems and solutions by conducting regular workshops, internships, site visits, and industrial visits, software and skill training programs. The department regularly publishes its biannual magazine ‘Aarunya’ which showcases the achievement of students and faculty. This magazine acts as a platform for students to present their co-curricular and extra activities like NCC, NSS and Sports.
