The Department of Information Science & Engineering (ISE), was established in the year 1999 . To accommodate the needs of the software industry, the Department was founded with an initial intake of 40 students. Further, the intake was increased to 60 in the year 2000 and subsequently to 120, 180 and 240 in the year 2016,2019 and 2024 respectively. This course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the principles, theories, and practical applications that form the foundation of Information Science, a dynamic field at the intersection of computer science, mathematics, and engineering. This course helps the students to delve into the diverse and evolving landscape of information systems, data management, and computational intelligence. Information Science Engineering plays a pivotal role in our increasingly digitized and interconnected world, influencing the way we communicate, process information, and make decisions.
The Department provides state-of-the-art facilities, where innovation meets education. The facilities are designed to provide a conducive environment for learning, research, and hands-on exploration in the dynamic field of computer science. The Department maintains strong connections with industries and facilitates internship opportunities for students. Industry partnerships provide students with real-world exposure, bridging the gap between academic learning and industry demands. With cutting-edge facilities, the Department aims to cultivate a learning environment that nurtures curiosity, fosters innovation, and prepares students for successful careers in the ever-evolving field of computer science. Over the years, the Department has placed 80–85% of qualifying students in reputable industries, demonstrating a good track record of placement.
In 2019, the department of Information Science & Engineering (ISE) collaborated with ICT Academy to offer industry-based courses like Google (for Cloud and Android courses), and UiPath (for Robotic Process Automation course). Since 2020, ISE is part of Google’s Career Readiness Program. Department has a high placement rate with attractive packages and has a high-end NVIDIA server to explore more into data analytics and also has qualified and supportive faculty to cater to the needs of the aspiring students and upgrade their skills.

Problem Solving using Agile Methodology: Industry Perspective-23 and 24 August 2024
A two-day workshop titled "Problem Solving using Agile Methodology: Industry Perspective" was organized by the Department of Information Science & Engineering in collaboration with IEI and WIPFLI on 23 and 24 August 2024.
The workshop featured interactive sessions where students engaged in problem-solving exercises using Agile methodologies. The hands-on approach helped students understand the practical aspects of Agile frameworks, including Scrum, Kanban, and SAFe.
On the second dy of the workshop the groups were given task to provide solutions for the problems given on the previous day. The workshop concluded with a panel discussion where the facilitators shared their industry experiences, challenges, and success stories in implementing Agile methodologies.

The Department of ISE, in collaboration with VISTA, organized an engaging tech event titled “𝗪𝗘𝗕 𝗖𝗥𝗔𝗙𝗧” on 13th September 2024. The workshop was led by the third-year ISE students Omkar Prabhu and Sayeem Ahmed. Omkar guided the participants through setting up Visual Studio Code and working on a beginner-level project using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Sayeem introduced the fundamentals of Node.js and Express.js. The workshop was designed primarily for second-year students to understand the essentials of website development.
Riot Rumble-28 September 2024
The VISTA Student Association, from the Department of Information Science and Engineering, hosted an exciting "Riot Rumble" tournament on September 28, 2024, drawing competitive gamers from all over campus. Eight teams participated in the event, competing in the popular multiplayer game Valorant. The tournament featured a four-round structure. The event highlighted the rising enthusiasm for esports within the VISTA community, providing a memorable experience for both participants and spectators and paving the way for more gaming events in the future.
Figma workshop- 18 October 2024
VISTA, the student association of the department successfully organized a Figma workshop on Friday, 18th October 2024. The aim of the workshop was to offer students hands-on experience with the powerful design tool for creating, sharing, and testing digital products. The session was led by two talented third-year students, Vishnuprasad and Dhanush Naik, who expertly guided participants through the basics of Figma, highlighting its various features and functions.
The Participants were introduced to new and innovative design techniques that were easy to grasp. The Figma workshop was a resounding success, offering participants the opportunity to enhance their skills in digital design.
My Journey- 11 November 2024
The Department of Information Science and Engineering (ISE), in collaboration with IIC, IEI, and VISTA, organized an inspiring entrepreneurship talk titled "My Journey". The session was delivered by Dr. Prabhakar Shastri, Director of ISA Technologies Pvt. Ltd.
He shared his entrepreneurial journey and valuable insights to inspire and guide students. He emphasized the key qualities needed to succeed as an entrepreneur, such as risk-taking, time management, self-discipline, and confidence.
He also encouraged students to motivate others, share personal experiences to help others, and always maintain punctuality and preparation. The importance of cost-effective solutions and a proactive approach to problem-solving were also key themes of his talk. Dr. Shastri’s motivational anecdotes and practical advice left a strong impression on the audience, encouraging students to explore the challenges and opportunities of entrepreneurship while preparing them for personal and professional growth.

The session highlighted the difference between gender equity and gender equality, the challenges in achieving equality, and the role of educational institutions in fostering inclusivity. SAP Hackfest Regional Round -4 April 2025
SAP Hackfest Regional Round was jointly organized by SAP, IEEE, VISTA, HackerEarth Hub NMAMIT, AIC NITTE Incubation Centre, PSG, and NEXTGrids at N.M.A.M. Institute of Technology on 4 April 2025.

VISTA, the student association of the Department of Information Science and Engineering in collaboration with IEEE NMAMIT, organized a two day hands-on workshop for high school students of S.M.S. English Medium School, Brahmavar, Udupi. The event aimed to introduce young minds to foundational concepts in emerging technologies and web development, fostering curiosity and innovation through experiential learning.
The first day was dedicated to the Internet of Things (IoT). Students were introduced to the basics of IoT, including its applications and potential impact in various domains. Participants explored commonly used devices such as the Arduino Uno and ESP32 boards, along with basic sensors. The session was structured to provide both theoretical insights and practical exposure.
On the second day, the focus was on app development and web technologies. The morning session featured an introduction to MIT App Inventor, a visual programming environment that enables students to create basic Android applications without prior coding experience. This intuitive platform helped students grasp the logic of app development in a fun and interactive manner.
In the afternoon, students were introduced to the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. They learned how to structure a webpage, style it, and add simple interactivity using JavaScript. The session was conducted by Ms. Nandini B Shetty, a distinguished Notary and Legal Advisor from Karkala. During the session, Ms. Nandini delved into several crucial topics, including the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, Measures for the Prevention of Ragging, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, Criminal Proceedings, and more. Her insightful presentation shed light on the paramount importance of legal awareness among students and its far-reaching significance within the academic domain.

The VISTA Department Student Association organised a workshop on “Build and Boot” on 15th September 2023. The session was conducted by Dr. Jason Elroy Martis, Associate Professor, Dept. of ISE, NMAMIT, and Mr. Amar Shetty, Lab Assistant, Dept. of ISE, NMAMIT.
The workshop provided an overview of essential computer components, including CPUs, motherboards, RAM, hard drives, power supply units, and peripherals. The workshop provided students with valuable hands-on experience in disassembling and assembling different computer components. Additionally, the installation of Windows and Ubuntu operating systems expanded their knowledge of software installation and setup.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has rapidly evolved to become one of the most transformative technologies in recent years, impacting various industries. In line with this technological evolution, Department of Information Science and Engineering, in association with IEEE Student Branch, and ISTE Students’ Chapter, NMAMIT, Nitte organised a two day workshop on “Internet of Things” on 13th & 14th October 2023.
The workshop commenced with an informal inaugural address by Dr. Balasubramani R., Dr. I.R. Mithanthaya and Dr. Sachin Bhat, setting the tone for the two-day event. Mr. David John Saldanha provided a comprehensive introduction to IoT, emphasising its relevance in today's world. Mr. Shravan Venkatesh K delved into the architecture and components of IoT, giving participants an insight into its intricate workings.Participants engaged in a hands-on session, where they learned to set up and use various IoT sensors and actuators.
One-day hands-on workshop on “Research Paper Writing Skills” - 27 October 2023
IEEE Student branch of NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte organized a one-day hands-on workshop on “Research Paper Writing Skills” on October 27, 2023, in association with IEEE Mangalore Subsection at the ISE department lab. Dr. Manjunath K N, Department of CSE, Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal was the resource person.
He started the workshop with a presentation on basics of research and research methodology, need for publishing papers, structure of the thesis and research articles. In another session speaker discussed the ethical issues in publication, selecting good journals and conferences, different quality parameters regarding journals, significant errors resulting desk rejection of papers, and good practices to be followed for quick acceptance of papers, travel grants available for students to present papers in reputed international conferences.
Motivational Talk on on "Indian Space Technology and Application Program" - 3 November 2023
The ISE Department, in association with IIC and IEI student chapter organized a motivational session on "Indian Space Technology and Application Program" by Dr. A.G. Ananth. This collaborative effort aimed to provide students with valuable insights into Indian space technology and its practical applications, further enhancing their academic and career pursuits. It was conducted on 3rd of November 2023. He shared profound insights into various space models and missions, including the renowned Chandrayaan mission.
IoT Outreach Program - 9th of January 2024
VISTA, the student association of ISE hosted an IoT Outreach Program at Green Park Central School, Hiriadka on the 9th of January 2024. The outreach program aimed to introduce students to the exciting world of the Internet of Things (IoT) and empower them with practical knowledge about microcontrollers and sensors. Students were introduced to microcontrollers such as Arduino Uno, ESP32, and Arduino Nano. Detailed pin diagrams were explained, emphasising the significance of each pin in the functionality of these microcontrollers.
Five day FDP on “Machine Learning and Deep Learning Techniques for Cyber Security”- 8 to 12 January 2024
Department of Information Science and Engineering in collaboration with Staff Development Center of NitteDU, organised a five-day Faculty Development Program on the topic “Machine Learning and Deep Learning Techniques for Cyber Security” from 8th to 12th January 2024. The program was funded by IEEE Student Branch NMAMIT, Nitte and DLithe. The FDP was coordinated by Dr. Usha Diwakarla, Associate Professor, and Dr. Manjula Gururaj Rao, Associate Professor, of the Department. The program highlighted the importance of machine learning and deep learning techniques in enhancing cyber security measures in the current era.
Android Application Development using Kotlin, an Entrepreneurship Enablement Program - 15 to 17 February 24
A three day workshop on Android Application Development using Kotlin was organised in collaboration with IIC, IEI student chapters of NMAMIT and Mevi technology on 15-17 February 2024.
The workshop successfully achieved its objectives of imparting practical skills, fostering an entrepreneurial mindset, and creating a dynamic and collaborative learning environment. The workshop, enriched by the resource person’s expertise, served as a catalyst for participants to embark on their journey in Android app development with newfound enthusiasm and confidence.
Higher Education Opportunities at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee - 21st of March 2024
Student association VISTA in collaboration with the ISTE Student Chapter and Department of ISE, organised a program on “Higher Education Opportunities at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.” The event took place on March 21, 2024.
Dr. Roshan M. D’Souza, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, delivered a comprehensive overview of the educational offerings at his institution, emphasising collaborative learning across various disciplines. The seminar aimed to raise awareness about the significance of pursuing higher education for building a robust career.
Developer Student Clubs are university based community groups for students interested in Google developer technologies. Students from all undergraduate or graduate programs interested in growing as developers are welcome. By joining a DSC, students enhance their knowledge in a peer-to-peer learning environment and build solutions for local businesses and their community.

First started in 1941 as the Association of Principals of Technical Institutions (APTI), it was converted into the "Indian Society for Technical Education" in 1968 with a view to expand its activities to advance the cause of Technology Education. ISTE has an Executive Council at the National level. It has an active membership of more than 97286 Technical Teachers, 5,66,466 student members, and more than 2345 Institutional members (including IITs, IISc, NITs, and other leading Technical Institutions), 1166 faculty chapters, and 1280 students’ chapters throughout the country. The major objective of the ISTE is to assist and contribute to the production and development of top-quality professional engineers and technicians needed by the industries and other organizations. Being the only national organization of educators in the field of Engineering and Technology, ISTE effectively contributes to various missions of the Union Government. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, CTE/Department of Science and Technology/MIT/State Govts. are well associated with the ISTE for programs relating to technical education.
The Versatile Information Science Technical Aspirants ( VISTA ), a club in NMAMIT Nitte, has been formed by the students of Information Science and Engineering for the benefit of students with an intention to provide a platform to participate in co-curricular activities and to give opportunity to mingle with other students. The motive of this association is to bring out the hidden talent and to involve each member in various activities so that the youth exuberance should not be confined to class room only.

Student Chapters provide unique opportunities for networking, mentoring and bonding over common interests. They provide support both within the student community and to local communities outside the institution.
Started in May 2015, NMAMIT ACM is actively conducts various technical and professional events like workshops, trainings, coding competitions, paper presentations, symposium, industry visits etc.
The Computer Society of India(CSI), started in the institute in the year 2007, aims at imparting technical knowledge and ethical responsibilities in the students through all its activities. It encourages and motivates students to organize and volunteer in various workshops & events to instill in them a sense of responsibility, confidence and determination. It also aims at overall personality development by providing hands on workshops to educate students in latest trends. The theoretical knowledge obtained in the classes is used for the implementation, hence providing the practical knowledge to all. Technical talks are arranged to keep students updated about the recent technologies. Every possible attempt is made to equip students with the best of technical knowledge to mould them into a perfect engineer.
Computer Society of India (CSI), India’s largest and oldest body of information technology professionals, has instituted national awards for individuals and organizations with significant contribution to the IT community. During the 53rd Annual CSI Convention - 2020 held at KIIT University, Bhubaneshwar, Odissa, during 16th - 18th January 2020, NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte was awarded with prestigious " Best Accredited Student Branch Award " and “Largest Student Branch Award” for contributions made during 2017-2019. Dr. Udaya Kumar K Shenoy, Professor, Dept. of CSE and Senior Life Member of CSI and Dr. Sharada U Shenoy, Associate Professor, Dept. of CSE and NMAMIT CSI Student Branch Counsellor received the awards in the presence of Dr. Achuytananda Samanta, MP, Founder KIIT & KISS, Dr. Gulsan Rai, Cyber Security Adviser, PMO, Dr. Mike Hinchy, President of IFIP, Prof. K K Aggarwal, Chairman, NBA, Sri Rajiv Kumar, Member Secretary, AICTE, Dr. R. K. Vyas, CSI Chairman Elect and other dignitaries.
The selection for the Best Chapters awards and Best Student Branch awards are based on the last three years' performance and activities among nearly 400 institutions. With more than 700 membership count, CSI Student Branch at NMAM Institute of Technology has conducted more than hundred technical events including conferences, workshops, technical talks, seminars, quizzes, paper presentations and various competitions for engineering students in last three years.
Dr . Sharada U Shenoy, the CSI Student Branch Counsellor at NMAMIT bagged "Longest Continuous Student Branch Counsellor award" for the year 2017-19, for her contributions towards CSI activities at the Institute.
During the 53rd Annual Convention with the theme “Digital Democracy- IT for Change” many technical sessions and panel discussions were held in which industry experts, educationists, government officials participated and provided the digital road-map of India. Dr. Gulsan Rai, Cyber Security Adviser, PMO, Prof. K K Aggarwal, Chairman, NBA, Sri Rajiv Kumar, Member Secretary, AICTE, Sri Tarun Vijay, Chairman NMA, Sri Vineeth Goenka, Governing Council Member, CRIS, Dr. S.K. Sahoo, Director MSME, GOI, Dr. Sudhanshu Sarangi, Police Commissioner, Odisha, Dr Subash Pani, IAS, Dr. L.M. Patnaik, IISc. were among them.
This is the consecutive third year that NMAMIT, Nitte Student Branch has received "Best Accredited Student Branch Award" and "Longest Continuous SBC award".

The Institution of Engineers (India), a national organization of engineers in India has more than a million members in 15 engineering disciplines in 114 centers or chapters in India and overseas; it is the world's largest multi-disciplinary engineering professional society in engineering and technology world. Established in 1920 in Kolkata it is acclaimed to have pioneered non-formal education in engineering. The Institution of Engineers (India) conducts an examination of its associate membership which is considered to be one part with B.E. / B.Tech. When contemplated as an eligibility qualification to write competitive examinations like the Indian Civil Service, Indian Engineering Services, GATE, etc., and for employment in Government, public and private sectors in India. This qualification is recognized by the Ministry of HRD, government of India, as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. The Institution of Engineers (India) was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1935. It is currently headquartered in 8 Gokhale Road, Kolkata. NMAMIT has Institution of Engineers (India) students’ chapter for all the branches with About 1500 student members. This chapter has been conducting branch level, Institution level and intercollegiate level technical programs.
