The Department of Computer Science & Engineering, established in 1986, offers UG, PG and research (leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D.) programs. The Department practices outcome-based education since 2014. With state-of-the-art laboratories and other supporting facilities to provide enhanced learning environment, the Department boasts of well qualified teaching faculty with rich research, teaching and industrial experience.

The Department has excellent placement track record in reputed industries with an average of 80 – 85% placement of eligible students over the years. The Department regularly conducts audit courses, and special courses on advanced topics, to bridge the gap between the curriculum and the need of the industry. The Department offers M.Tech programs in Computer Science & Engineering and Cyber Security. From the year 2022-23 M.Tech program is under Nitte University.

  • PO1: Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.

Center of Innovation for studies on Automatic Natural Language Processing and Speech Disorder Problems in Kannada Language

The two year project granted during 2016-17 to Dr. Surendra Shetty, Professor and Head, Department of MCA as the principal investigator and Dr.Sarika Hedge, Associate Professor, Department of CSE as the co-principal investigator was sanctioned Rs 20 lakhs in the year 2017-18. The project was successfully completed within the stipulated duration and has been instrumental in establishing “Centre of innovation for studies on Automatic Natural Language Processing and Speech Disorder Problems in Kannada Language” using the equipments purchased during 1st phase of KFIST-L1.

Dr. Aravinda C V, Associate Professor, and a student Mr. Amar Prabhu, of the Department of CSE carried out a collaborative research work on “Ancient Asian Character Recognition” with Dr. Lin Meng, Associate Professor, Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering from 5 January - 31 March 2020 at Intelligent - High Performance Computing Lab located in Ristumeikan University, Japan. The research work was carried out based on the two types of character recognition, i.e., Oracle Bone Inscriptions and Kuzushi Character Recognition with an objective to preserve these cultural heritages by understanding the ancient characters and unlock the potential knowledge. About CSI

The Computer Society of India(CSI), started in the institute in the year 2007, aims at imparting technical knowledge and ethical responsibilities in the students through all its activities. It also aims at overall personality development by providing hands on workshops to educate students in latest trends. During the 53rd Annual CSI Convention - 2020 held at KIIT University, Bhubaneshwar, Odissa, during 16th - 18th January 2020, NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte was awarded with prestigious " Best Accredited Student Branch Award " and “Largest Student Branch Award” for contributions made during 2017-2019. The selection for the Best Chapters awards and Best Student Branch awards are based on the last three years' performance and activities among nearly 400 institutions. With more than 700 membership count, CSI Student Branch at NMAM Institute of Technology has conducted more than hundred technical events including conferences, workshops, technical talks, seminars, quizzes, paper presentations and various competitions for engineering students in last three years.

Dr . Sharada U Shenoy, the CSI Student Branch Counsellor at NMAMIT bagged "Longest Continuous Student Branch Counsellor award" for the year 2017-19, for her contributions towards CSI activities at the Institute.

During the 53rd Annual Convention with the theme “Digital Democracy- IT for Change” many technical sessions and panel discussions were held in which industry experts, educationists, government officials participated and provided the digital road-map of India. The Institution of Engineers (India), a national organization of engineers in India has more than a million members in 15 engineering disciplines in 114 centers or chapters in India and overseas; it is the world's largest multi-disciplinary engineering professional society in engineering and technology world. Established in 1920 in Kolkata it is acclaimed to have pioneered non-formal education in engineering. The Institution of Engineers (India) conducts an examination of its associate membership which is considered to be one part with B.E. / B.Tech. When contemplated as an eligibility qualification to write competitive examinations like the Indian Civil Service, Indian Engineering Services, GATE, etc., and for employment in Government, public and private sectors in India. This qualification is recognized by the Ministry of HRD, government of India, as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. The Institution of Engineers (India) was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1935. It is currently headquartered in 8 Gokhale Road, Kolkata. NMAMIT has Institution of Engineers (India) students’ chapter for all the branches with About 1500 student members. This chapter has been conducting branch level, Institution level and intercollegiate level technical programs.

About ACE

The Association of Computer Engineers (ACE), a club in NMAMIT Nitte, has been formed by the students of Computer Science and Engineering with an objective ofcreating a platform for students to participate in co-curricular activities and mingle with other students. The motive of this association is to bring out the hidden talent and to involve each member in various activities so that the youth exuberance should not be confined to the class room. In his session, Mr. Marathe highlighted the impact of networking technology in emerging markets, the advantages of cloud-native architectures, and emphasized the importance of continuous learning and professional networking in career growth.

Alumni Talk by Mr. Vadiraja Bhatt, a distinguished alumnus of the institution and currently a Principal Engineer at Cloudera Inc

A highly informative and inspiring guest lecture was delivered by Mr. Vadiraja Bhatt, a distinguished alumnus of the institution and currently a Principal Engineer at Cloudera Inc. on September 5, 2024 at Sowparnika Hall, NMAMIT. With over three decades of experience in the tech industry, Mr. Bhatt brought a wealth of knowledge and insight to the session. The topic of the lecture, “Vector Databases,” explored a cutting-edge area of technology that is revolutionizing the way machines understand and process data, particularly in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning. He then delved into the fundamentals of vector databases, explaining how they differ from traditional databases by enabling semantic searches based on meaning rather than exact matches.

Mr. Bhatt also discussed the architectural components, high-dimensional data challenges, and performance requirements of these systems. Real-world applications such as intelligent chatbots, personalized recommendations, semantic search engines, and facial recognition systems were showcased to demonstrate the immense potential and current usage of vector databases in smart technologies.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A where students inquired about career paths in AI, required skills, and practical ways to get started in the field. It provided a meaningful glimpse into the future of technology and empowered students to actively pursue knowledge and innovation in this evolving domain.

Talk on “Indian Space Programme”

Dr. A.G. Ananth, a former ISRO scientist, delivered a talk on the "Indian Space Programme" for 5th semester CSE students in the B and C sections on 31 October, 2023. The event covered satellite technology and the future of India's space industry, highlighting ISRO's contributions. The formative and engaging session included a Q&A, offering students valuable insights into space technology. The event inspired students with insights into the achievements and future of the Indian Space Programme.

Hands-on Workshops

ReactJS Workshop

A hands-on workshop on ReactJS was organized by CSE students Swasthik Shetty of 5th semester and Numan Naeem of 7th semester on 20 October 2022. The organizers shared their experience on react JS with the participants. Various aspects of react and their fundamentals such as their use in building web applications were discussed in the workshop.


Placement Talks

The Association of Computer Engineers, in collaboration with ABHYUDAY – the Department of Counselling, Welfare, Training & Placement – conducted a placement talk on 8th December 2022 at Sambhram Hall for 5th semester CSE students. The interactive session featured placed students Anuroop Ravindra, R. P. Shamita, Prathamesh, and Rashmi Murali, who shared their placement journeys, resume-building tips, interview preparation strategies, and insights into various career opportunities.

The Association of Computer Engineers and ABHYUDAY – the Department of Counselling, Welfare, Training & Placement organised a placement talk for 5th semester CSE students at Sambhram Hall on on November 15, 2023.

The event featured an interactive session with placed students, who shared their placement journeys and valuable advice. Resource persons included Ardra Madhu (Samsung Semiconductors), Aaron Jevil Nazareth (Louisia AI), Gaurav Pai (Juniper Networks), Swasthik Shetty (Redbus), Vasudha G (HPE), and Chinmaya Shyamaraj (Nutanix), all final-year CSE students. They provided insights on resume building, placement preparation, and interview strategies, helping students better understand job market challenges and effectively navigate the placement process.


Coding Competitions

Code Relay

CODE RELAY, a technical event conducted to provide a platform for students to showcase their coding skills on 10th December 2022. The event was open to all branches. The event saw teams compete in two rounds: (1) Aptitude – a team-based challenge, and (2) Coding – a relay-style contest. Winners were declared based on the highest team scores, and exciting cash prizes were awarded.


Social Outreach Programs

Visit to Vijetha Vasathiyuta Visshesa Saale

ACE organized an outreach program at Vijetha Vasathiyuta Visshesa Shale, a special school for over 100 students of varying ages on May 2nd, 2024. Around 30 students attended the program. Dr. Kanthi Harish, principal of the school warmly welcomed the ACE team. The event began with a brief address from Dr. Harish, followed by Dr. Pradeep Kanchan, Head of ACE, who emphasized empathy and connection.

ACE students engaged with special school children through interactive activities such as dancing and a passing-the-ball game, fostering joy, inclusivity, teamwork, and coordination. Winners were rewarded with chocolates and stationery items. The event, filled with laughter and friendship, reflected generosity and kindness, leaving a lasting impact on the school community.

The IoT and Web Development Workshop, held on November 11, 2024, at Sundar Puranik Memorial Government High School

The IoT and Web Development Workshop was held at Sundar Puranik Memorial Government High School on 11 November 2024. The outreach program was aimed at introducing school students to emerging technologies. The session featured engaging demonstrations on IoT components and sensors, allowing students to visualize how these tools connect the physical and digital worlds.

A beginner-friendly introduction to web development familiarized participants with the basics of website creation. Students actively participated in discussions and hands-on activities, showcasing great curiosity and enthusiasm. The workshop not only educated but also inspired young minds to explore the fields of technology and innovation, leaving a lasting impact and igniting a spark for future learning.

Visit to Parpale Ashram

The ACE Association organized a visit to Parpale Ashram (Senior Citizens’ Home) on 21st November 2024 as part of its community outreach initiative. The objective of the program was to bring joy, companionship, and a sense of togetherness to the residents of the home. The event commenced with interactive activities designed to foster engagement between the students and the senior citizens. Games and simple physical exercises were conducted, creating an atmosphere of fun and relaxation. A particularly memorable part of the program was the sharing of life experiences by the residents, whose stories, filled with wisdom and emotion, provided students with valuable lessons in resilience, gratitude, and the importance of human connections.

The program further evolved into a celebration of unity with music and dance, where both students and residents participated enthusiastically, spreading cheer and positivity. The visit concluded with the distribution of refreshments and wholesome food, marking the end of a day filled with warmth, care, and mutual appreciation.
