Post-COVID global semiconductor market has grown exponentially with $590 billion in 2021 and also expected to grow to $1 Trillon by 2030. The driving force of this tremendous growth is the technologies such as Artificial Intelligence(AI), Electric Vehicle (EV), 5G,Internet of Things (IoT), Health Care etc. Realization of these technologies, depend on the production of silicon chip for the hardware required. Many chip-making industries in R&D, design, manufacturing, testing, etc. are established to fill the gap in the chip supply chain. Government of India announced semiconductor scheme with an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore in December 2021 to fulfil Aatma Nirbhar Bharath to contribute significantly to the global semiconductor market. Various initiatives are taken in industries, business and academics to ensure robust and sustainable semiconductor ecosystem in India

Bachelor of Technology in Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design and Technology) is the specialization of B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering. VLSI is the process of design and manufacturing of Integrated Circuits (IC) or silicon chips. This programme aims to cater to the exponential rise in demand for semiconductor talent pool in India and across the globe. It prepares market-ready engineers in the field of semiconductor technology and electronics industries.

As India focuses on becoming a chip-making nation, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has also designed a curriculum for B.Tech in Electronics (VLSI Design and Technology). Our course is structured in line with the AICTE model curriculum and covers a range of topics from semiconductor device fundamentals, analog and digital circuits to VLSI circuits and design, IC design and technology, semiconductor equipment operation, manufacturing, assembly, testing and packaging, microcontrollers, embedded systems. It also includes study and usage of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and the programming, scripting languages for semiconductor design, synthesis, simulation, fabrication and testing.

Career prospects :

On successful completion of the course, graduates are recruited in Fabless design companies, Display Fabs, Semiconductor Fabs, Fabs for Compound Semiconductors, Silicon Photonics, Sensors, Discrete Semiconductors and Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) / OSAT facilities. The starting salary in a VLSI company varies from Rs 3 lakhs to Rs 20 lakhs per annum, with an average annual salary of Rs 14 lakhs. In core multinational companies the average annual salary for beginners varies from Rs 30 lakh to Rs 80 lakh.

The various schemes and policies are framed by Govt. of India to encourage start-ups, MSMEs, industries and large business houses. Also, Chips to Startup (C2S) programme of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Govt. of India is aiming to train 85,000 Engineers (Bachelors, Masters and PhDs) in ESDM over the period of 5 years.

Department Activities

The student association of the Department of VLSI Design and Technology, VLSI Engineering Department Association of Students (VEDAS), organised a “Demo Day 2025: Empowering Ideas with Embedded Intelligence” on 24 April 2025 for IV semester students. The event was conducted for showcasing microcontroller-based projects. The aim of this event was to encourage students to translate theoretical concepts into practical applications thereby enhance their technical proficiency and cultivating a problem-solving mind-set. The students demonstrated 11 working models and were appreciated for their creativity, collaborative spirit, team work, and good level of competence demonstrated in the domain.

The Department of VLSI Design and Technology organised a three-day workshop on “Analog Integrated Circuit Design using Cadence” from 3 to 5 April, 2025. The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Manjunath Badiger and Dr. Nisanth A, convened by Dr. Sushma P. S. The resource persons were from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIITA). The participants were led through an immersive hands-on session in Cadence Virtuoso tool, with circuit design, physical design and simulation of analog CMOS circuits. There were total of 28 participants which includes internal faculty members, external participants, B.Tech and M.Tech students.

The program was designed to provide intensive practical training in analog circuit design using the Cadence Custom IC Design Tool. Participants received hands-on experience in CMOS analog design, simulation techniques, layout methodologies, and high-frequency design concepts. The workshop served as a valuable platform for both faculty and students to enhance their technical skills, bridge the gap between theory and practical application, and build confidence in using Cadence Virtuoso. The inaugural function was presided over by Dr. Niranjan N. Chiplunkar, Principal, NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte. Dr. K. V. S. S. S. Sairam, Professor & Head, Department of ECE, NMAMIT, was the Chief Guest and Dr. Prasanna Kumar Misra from IIIT Allahabad was the guest of honour.

A one-day workshop on "Innovative Embedded System Design Through Design Thinking" was conducted on 4 April 2025 for IV semester students of B.Tech Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design and Technology) by the VLSI department in association with the Institution Innovation Council (IIC), NMAMIT, Nitte. The workshop aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of embedded system design and its industrial applications. The program combined theoretical sessions with hands-on exercises covering microcontrollers, firmware development, schematic design, and industry-specific design profiles. Participants worked with Raspberry Pi Pico and Uni-Kit boards, gaining practical experience in embedded product design flow and alternative firmware development approaches. The workshop was facilitated by Zilliot Technologies Private Limited, Mangalore.

The Department of VLSI Design and Technology, in association with the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, NMAMIT, Nitte, organised a two-day workshop on VLSI Design Using Cadence Tools on the 3 and 4 of October 2024 for final-year students of NMAMIT and Canara Engineering College, Benjanapadavu. The workshop aimed to train the students in the Cadence Tool and enhance the skill set of students in VLSI design and verification. The technical sessions began with “Introduction to VLSI Design: Tools, Flow, and Circuit Layout,” by Dr. Sushma P S, Associate Professor and HoD (Incharge), Department of VLSI Design and Technology, NMAMIT, followed by a hands-on session conducted by Prof. Varun S. Karadesai from Canara Engineering College. This workshop was conducted under the MoU between Nitte University and Canara Engineering College, with the objective of fostering collaborative learning and enhancing industry readiness in the field of VLSI design.

A group of 13 students from the Department of VLSI Design and Technology, accompanied by Dr. Nisanth A., Assistant Professor, visited the Department of Avionics at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram, from October 3 to 7 October 2024. The visit aimed to explore collaborative research opportunities, interact with faculty, and gain practical exposure to advanced fabrication and characterisation facilities. Students visited MEMS and Nanofabrication Lab, NEMS Sensor Systems Lab, and MEMS & Microelectronics Characterization Lab. They were introduced to spin coaters, sputter deposition systems, chemical vapour deposition (CVD) systems, photolithography setups, and wet etching benches and micro and nano fabrication processes. The visit enriched their technical knowledge and understanding of VLSI and MEMS technologies. It provided exposure to ongoing research at IIST, and fostered academic networking. The department expresses sincere gratitude to IIST for their support and hospitality.
