Department of Cybersecurity on 27 October 2025
The Department of Cyber Security, NMAM Institute of Technology, in association with PROTON and the Rotary Club Nitte (Zone-5, District 3182), organised a week-long Cyber Security Awareness Program (CSAP) from 27th to 31st October 2025 under the initiative “CyberCare: Awareness for the Next Generation”. The CyberCare Program was designed to educate school and college students on cyber hygiene, online safety, and responsible digital behaviour. The awareness sessions were organised across five institutions — Dr. NSAM Kannada Medium School, Nitte; Government High School, Kalya; Government High School, Belman; Government PU College, Belman; and Government Primary School, Kallambadi Padav.
Each session commenced with an inaugural ceremony, featuring addresses by eminent dignitaries including Dr. Roshan Fernandes, Rtn. Dr. Raghunandan K. R., and faculty coordinators Ms. Ashmi Kotian, Mr. S. Shyam Kumar, and Ms. Varshitha. Following the inauguration, student presenters from PROTON delivered highly engaging and informative sessions covering topics such as cybersecurity fundamentals, phishing awareness, social media scams, cyberbullying, and safe online practices. The sessions were further enriched through interactive quizzes and activity-based learning facilitated by PROTON members, which enhanced student participation and reinforced key learning outcomes. Guest speakers including Rtn. Vignesh Shenoy, Mr. Vincent Vinod, and Mr. Prasanna M. S., Sub-Inspector from Karkala Police Station, provided real-world perspectives on prevailing cyber threats and effective preventive strategies.The valedictory ceremony held at Government Primary School, Kallambadi Padav marked the successful culmination of the campaign, with dignitaries commending the initiative’s educational value, outreach, and tangible impact on young digital citizens.In conclusion, the CyberCare Program significantly contributed to raising awareness on digital safety and empowering students to navigate the online world with responsibility, vigilance, and informed decision-making.

The PROTON Association of the Cyber Security Department organised a creative and engaging event titled “Fish Tank (Reverse Shark Tank)” on 25th October 2025 at Shambhavi Hall, APJ Block. Conducted from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, the event witnessed enthusiastic participation from seven teams, each comprising two to three members. Designed to foster creativity, humour, communication, and teamwork, the event challenged participants to pitch imaginative and unconventional products as revolutionary inventions. In Round 1 – Product Pitch, teams presented their quirky concepts, demonstrating originality, persuasive ability, and presentation skills to captivate the judges. Round 2 – The Twist Challenge introduced unexpected scenarios, compelling participants to adapt swiftly and exhibit spontaneous problem-solving and presence of mind. The light-hearted yet intellectually stimulating atmosphere kept the audience and judges thoroughly engaged. Through its humorous and interactive approach, the event successfully promoted confidence building, creative marketing, and quick thinking among students. Concluding at 12:30 PM, “Fish Tank” left participants inspired, entertained, and enriched by the experience. Overall, the event served as a unique fusion of innovation, laughter, and learning, showcasing the department’s commitment to experiential and skill-based education.

The CTF event was coordinated by Mr. Rishi Bhati, President of PROTON, along with the core members. It aimed to provide students with real-world cybersecurity experience through hands-on problem-solving and teamwork. The competition was held across multiple labs of NMAMIT, Nitte ensuring a smooth and secure setup. Participants competed in challenges related to cryptography, web exploitation, forensics and reverse engineering. Around 100 students participated enthusiastically, showcasing analytical and technical skills. The event began at 9:45 AM and concluded at 12:45 PM after three hours of intense problem-solving. The prize distribution ceremony was held on 13th October 2025, where winners received cash prizes and certificates. The event was a great success, fostering technical learning, collaboration, and competitive spirit among participants..
Department of Cybersecurity on 07 October 2025
The Department of Cybersecurity conducted a workshop titled “From Idea to Publication: Writing an Effective Research Paper” at ADL04, SMV Block (AIDS Department), facilitated by Dr. Anisha P. Rodrigues and Mrs. Divya Jennifer Dsouza. The session focused on research methodology and LaTeX-based paper formatting, guiding participants through essential stages such as topic selection, literature review, citation practices, and document structuring.
The hands-on LaTeX session provided practical experience in formatting equations, images, and references, helping students gain technical proficiency in academic writing. Coordinated by Mr. Shyam Kumar and Ms. Ashmi K. Kotian, the workshop received excellent feedback for its clarity, practical approach, and contribution to strengthening students’ research and writing competencies.
Department of Cybersecurity on 27 March 2025
Cybersecurity students had the privilege of hosting Mr. Takashi Tsujiuchi, CEO of Findnext Co., Ltd., Japan, along with Prof. Harikrishna Bhat, Ms. Yasuko Sato, and Dr. Roshan Fernandes, Head of the Cybersecurity Department. The session offered valuable insights into Japan’s growing demand for cybersecurity professionals and highlighted global career opportunities in the field.
Mr. Tsujiuchi emphasised the need for international talent and the increasing significance of digital security, while Prof. Bhat guided students on the recruitment process and key skill sets required for placements in Japan. An engaging Q&A session helped clarify job expectations and cultural nuances of working in Japan.The event served as an inspiration for students to sharpen their technical competencies and pursue global opportunities in cybersecurity.
Proton – Department of Cybersecurity on 25 January 2025
PROTON, in association with the Computer Society of India (CSI), organised “Ctrl + Alt Code”, a coding and aptitude competition aimed at testing participants’ logical reasoning and programming expertise. The event comprised two rounds — Aptitude and Coding — and attracted 16 enthusiastic teams (41 participants) eager to demonstrate their skills.The first round evaluated reasoning and mathematical aptitude, while the second round challenged the top teams with six coding problems, enhanced by exciting power-ups that added a strategic edge. Squad 12 from the Department of Research and Development emerged as the winners, claiming a cash prize of INR 2000.Overall, the event was both engaging and intellectually stimulating, fostering teamwork, analytical thinking, and coding excellence among participants.

Over 50 students from various semesters actively participated, gaining insights into literature surveys, methodology design, result analysis and effective paper structuring. The event successfully provided students with a clear framework and practical guidance for initiating and presenting their research effectively.

The session aimed to guide second-year Cybersecurity students on placement preparation and career planning. Mr. Sachin shared valuable insights on placement timelines, campus and international opportunities, higher education prospects, and the significance of networking. He also highlighted key aspects of resume building, interview readiness, and adapting to global work environments. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Vruddith Shetty, followed by appreciatory remarks from Dr. Roshan Fernandes and Mr. S. Shyam.

The Department of Cyber Security, NMAMIT, in collaboration with EyeQDotNet, organised a seminar to provide students with valuable insights into cybersecurity concepts, ethical hacking, and career pathways in the domain. The session was conducted by Mr. Mohammed Sheikh Nihal, CEO of EyeQDotNet, along with his team, for the second-year Cybersecurity students. Key topics included cybersecurity fundamentals, ethical hacking principles, a live SQL injection demonstration, and career guidance in the field. Students gained awareness of the significance of ethics, hands-on learning, and interview readiness. The session also underscored EyeQDotNet’s mission to “Prevent, Protect, and Provide.” An engaging Q&A segment enabled students to clarify their queries and receive practical insights. The PROTON Association of the Department of Cybersecurity, NMAMIT, organised a hands-on workshop on August 31, 2024, for first-year students, introducing them to the fundamentals of cybersecurity and ethical hacking. The session, facilitated by Mr. Prashith Shetty and Mr. Rishi Bhati, commenced with an address by Dr. Roshan Fernandes, Head of the Department. Students received practical exposure to Linux commands, Git and GitHub, Google Dorking, penetration testing, and phishing simulations using Zphisher. The workshop further covered network scanning (Ping, Nmap), Metasploit, and input sanitization through OWASP Juice Shop. Advanced demonstrations on DNS spoofing and Instagram hacking were conducted within an ethical framework to emphasize responsible practice. The session concluded with an engaging discussion on the Dark Web and the TOR Browser, enhancing awareness of online safety. Faculty members Mr. Shyam Kumar S and Dr. Manjunath Kamath K were also present, making the workshop an insightful and enriching learning experience for all participants.

The Rotary Club, Nitte in association with the Cybersecurity Department, NMAMIT, organized a one-week Cyber Security Awareness Program (CSAP) for schools in Karkala Taluk. The program aimed to educate students on cybersecurity threats, safe online practices and responsible digital behaviour. Sessions covered malware, identity theft, phishing scams, social media scams, cyberbullying and practical strategies like HTTPS, multi-factor authentication and strong passwords. Students also learned about the Dark Web and participated in interactive quizzes. The program was inaugurated by Rtn. K. Sathish Kumar and Dr. Roshan Fernandes, with participation from school principals and Rotary Club members. Across the first three days at Dr. N.S.A.M Junior College, Government High School Kalya, and Government High School Belman, the program engaged 300 students in total, successfully promoting safe online behaviour and awareness of cyber threats.

PROTON, the Branch Association of the Cybersecurity Department NMAMIT, hosted Fish Tank - Season 1, a dynamic "Reversed Shark Tank" event that tested the creativity and entrepreneurial skills of NMAMIT's brightest minds. Held at Phalguni Hall, the competition featured 14 teams of students who were challenged to pitch every day, quirky items in innovative ways, with a unique twist that kept everyone on their toes. Teams pitched items like a dirty pillow, rotten banana, and a torn shirt, all while competing for a 2000 INR prize. But the twist didn’t stop there – in Round 2, teams swapped products and were tasked with re-pitching them with a completely new, judge-imposed scenario. The stakes were high, and the level of creativity was even higher.

PROTON organised “Bond and Beyond,” a senior–junior interaction event held at Shambhavi Seminar Hall, APJ Block. The gathering brought together around 70 enthusiastic students for an afternoon filled with fun, laughter, and connection. Hosted by Rishi Bhati and Prashith Shetty, the event featured engaging activities such as Random Dares and Buddy Hunt, encouraging teamwork and interaction among participants. A vibrant opening dance performance by the juniors set an energetic tone for the occasion. The event successfully fostered camaraderie, broke barriers between batches, and strengthened the Proton community spirit, leaving students with cherished memories and lasting bonds within the department.

Their achievement reflects strong technical competence, creativity, and commitment to excellence in the field of cyber security.
An interdisciplinary team comprising Vruddith R. Shetty, Pratheeksha (III Year B.Tech CSE – Cyber Security), Gaurav B. Shet (CSE), and Niyuktha Sandeep (Biotechnology) secured First Place in the Cybersecurity track at Srinathon 2.0, an international 24-hour hackathon hosted by Srinivas Institute of Technology on 9 October 2025.
An II-year B.Tech CSE (Cyber Security) team comprising Adarsh H. N., Ravi Shashi Netre, Vamshaj Rai, and Jeevan Nayak secured Second Place in the Cybersecurity track at Srinathon 2.0, an international-level 24-hour hackathon hosted by Srinivas Institute of Technology on 9 October 2025.
A team comprising Aditya Bhat K and Sujnan D. Devadiga secured First Place in the Luminiq Quiz Competition conducted as part of Udbhava 2025 at the Nitte Institute of Professional Education, Mangalore, on 8 October 2025.
The Department of Cyber Security reported notable achievements at the Cyber Security Bootcamp conducted by NITK Surathkal in collaboration with CySeck (IISc). Mubashar (V Semester), Ravi (III Semester), Bhavin (V Semester), and Amithesh (V Semester) secured top performer positions, ranking 6th, 8th, 9th, and 10th respectively, in the CTF competition held among 300+ participants.

PROTON is the official student association of the Department of Cybersecurity at NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte. It was established with the objective of fostering learning, collaboration, and innovation in the field of cybersecurity. The association serves as a vital link between academic learning and industry practices by providing students with practical exposure to cutting-edge tools, methodologies, and real-world security challenges.
Throughout the academic year, PROTON organises a range of impactful events such as technical workshops, Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions, expert talks, and cybersecurity awareness sessions. Its flagship event, Cyber Insight, offers participants hands-on experience in ethical hacking, digital forensics, and cyber defence strategies. Other signature initiatives include Cyberloop, Ctrl Alt + Code, and the Workshop on Research Papers, all designed to enhance technical competence and research aptitude among students.
In addition to its technical endeavours, PROTON actively engages in community outreach through Cybersecurity Awareness Programs (CSAP) conducted in nearby schools, aiming to educate young learners on safe online practices and responsible digital citizenship.
Guided by dedicated faculty advisors, the association is currently led by its dynamic Core Team (2025–26), headed by President Rishi Bhati. Looking ahead, PROTON envisions expanding its impact by hosting inter-collegiate cybersecurity challenges, collaborating with industry experts, and promoting research-driven projects, thereby empowering students to excel as competent cybersecurity professionals in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

The Department of Cybersecurity, NMAM Institute of Technology (NMAMIT), inaugurated its Centre of Excellence in collaboration with Vill Design, Japan, on 15 September 2025. The event was graced by Dr. M. S. Moodithaya, Vice Chancellor, Nitte (Deemed to be University), as Chief Guest, along with delegates from Vill Design Japan Mr. Naotaka Taguchi, Mr. Hiroshi Nakayama and Mr. Takashi Tsujiuchi. Prof. Harikrishna Bhat highlighted NMAMIT’s collaborations with Japan.
The guests appreciated the Department’s vision and expressed confidence that the Vill Design Lab would foster innovation and excellence in Cybersecurity. The Centre offers services including Web and Network Penetration Testing, EDR and Microsoft 365 Testing and Web and Mobile Application Development.
The Centre operates under the guidance of Dr. Roshan Fernandes, supported by Ms. Shivani Pai and Mr. Hemraj Narwariya as full-time staff members.
