National level policy development

Relationships with regional NGOs and government for SDG policy

1. UMMID initiative in collaboration with the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India
Congenital and hereditary genetic diseases are a significant health burden in India, and hence there is a need for adequate and effective genetic testing and counselling services. In India’s urban areas, congenital malformations and genetic disorders are the third most common cause of mortality in newborns. The diagnostic tests for many of the genetic disorders available in India are at a relatively nascent stage. While antenatal diagnostics for a few genetic diseases are available, these are available in very few hospitals. Considering these facts, the Department, in the year 2019, launched the DBT-UMMID initiative with the objectives of establishing Genetic Diagnostic Units called National Inherited Diseases Administration (NIDAN) Kendras in Government Hospitals, producing skilled clinicians in the area of Human Genetics (Biochemical Genetics, Cytogenetics, Molecular Genetics, Clinical Genetics and Comprehensive Clinical Care), and screening of pregnant women and newborn babies for diagnosis of inherited genetic diseases in aspirational districts to provide comprehensive clinical care.

GOI has launched the ‘Transformation of Aspirational Districts’ initiative, of the 112 identified districts. Wayanad district of Kerala state is one where the health indicators are far below the national average, hence it has been taken up for rapid transformation and inclusive growth of all its citizens.

GOI has chosen Justice KS Hegde Charitable Hospital, a unit of Nitte (Deemed to be University) to establish a Diagnostic Centre for Inherited Disorders, a DBT-UMMID Initiative to screen pregnant women and newborns in the Aspirational District Wayanad-Kerala.

Proposed Objectives:
  • To establish prenatal screening services at aspirational district hospital for high risk pregnancies and hemoglobinopathies.
  • To establish newborn screening services at aspirational district hospital to identify relatively common treatable genetic metabolic disorders and to provide patient care.
  • To train the medical officers, nursing staff and other paramedical workers in the genetic screening and counselling of pregnant mothers carrying fetuses with high risk of genetic disorders in order to increase the awareness about hereditary disorders.
2. Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan
Unnat Bharat Abhiyan is a flagship program of the Ministry for Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, which aims to bring about transformational change in rural development processes by leveraging expertise of Knowledge Institutions. The Nitte (DU) has adopted 5 villages in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts under the ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan’ namely, Neere, Belma, Sasihithlu, Kadike and Thokur 1. Felt needs of the communities in these villages are being assessed to prioritize local development plans. The University offers its expertise and resources to help achieve these needs by liasoning with Government and non-governmental agencies.

7. Ocean alkalinity enhancement and its impacts on biogeochemical cycling.”
NitteDU in collaboration with Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad as part of DST Swarnajayanthi Fellowship Project has undertaken a project to study “Ocean alkalinity enhancement and its impacts on biogeochemical cycling.” It has been proposed that the enhanced ocean alkalinity through large scale mineral dissolution has potential to provide a solution to store large amounts of CO2 in the ocean. This project will provide concrete ideas about up to what scale ocean alkalinity can be increased without disturbing the ecosystem and otherwise. Consequences (feedback) of alkalinity enhancement will be known. This proposal is important to answer some fundamental questions on the scale of continental weathering and erosion in the geological past.
