About the Institution
Nitte Institute of Allied Health Sciences (NIAHS), established in 2025, is a constituent college
of Nitte (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru, and situated in the Medical Sciences
Complex at Deralakatte, Mangaluru.
About the program
The Master of Medical Laboratory Science course is a dynamic and essential program designed to prepare students for a vital role in the healthcare system. Medical laboratory technologists perform critical diagnostic tests that help physicians detect, diagnose, and treat diseases.
This comprehensive course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on training in areas such as Biochemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, Sample Collection, Blood Bank, Immunology, Cytology, Histopathology and Central Research Laboratory. Students learn to operate sophisticated laboratory equipment, analyze body fluids, and maintain quality control standards in diagnostic labs.
Whether you're seeking a rewarding healthcare career or aiming to pursue advanced studies, the Medical Laboratory Technology course offers a strong foundation in medical science, laboratory techniques, and patient care ethics.
Co-ordinator
Ms Archana H V, M.Sc. (Medical Laboratory Technology), has academic professional with over 22 years of teaching experience in Medical Laboratory Sciences. Former Principal of Nitte Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences, with strong skills in managing academic programs, developing course content, and supporting faculty growth. Has actively contributed to academic councils and boards of studies to improve education quality.
Infrastructure & Laboratory Facilities
Students in the MLT program receive hands-on training at the Central Laboratory of Justice K.S. Hegde Charitable Hospital—a fully equipped, state-of-the-art medical laboratory operating 24/7. This is NABL-accredited laboratory, recognized as one of India’s premier diagnostic centers, ensuring high standards in medical laboratory practices. The laboratory is classified as a large-scale diagnostic facility, conducting over 2,500 tests/day. The laboratory is staffed by a team of highly skilled professionals and follows a robust quality management system and organized sample handling protocols to ensure precise and reliable results.
Students train on cutting-edge diagnostic equipment at various departments including:
The Biochemistry laboratory is equipped with modern instruments like fully automated chemistry analyser, fully automated Immuno analyser, semi autoanalyser, electrophoresis unit and electrolyte analyser which are operated by skilled technicians. Internal and external Quality Control are carried out regularly to ensure good quality results.
The Microbiology Department has
- Viral diagnostic set – up for early and reliable diagnosis
- Gene expert for diagnosis of mycobacterium tuberculosis and viruses
- The ability to scale up in its diagnostic services provided, along with provision of advanced quality diagnostic services at an affordable cost to the mass public
- The Serology department has a fully automated ELISA system and all the sections are equipped with necessary instruments to carry out their diagnostic work. BacT/Alert system is used for automated blood and body fluid culture for early diagnosis of pathogens and Vitek is used for determining MIC values for antibiotic sensitivity for treatment. the Department has introduced ANA Screening and profile for autoimmune diseases and Chemiluminescence for testing HIV, HCV, HBV
- The Pathology laboratory has sections: Histopathology & Immunohistochemistry, Haematology, Cytology and Clinical pathology. The sections are well equipped with necessary and sophisticated instruments like the Automated Cell counter, Coagulation analyzer, ESR analyzer, Urine Analyzer, Liquid based cytology systems, Automatic Tissue Processor and stainer, Microtomes, Microwave oven, Monocular, Binocular, Trinocular and Pentahead Microscopes with CCTV, Phase contrast, darkfield and Photomicrography facilities, Cover slipper with transfer station & Digital pathology scanner and Computers for storing data. The Department uses the Robosoft system for rapid delivery of the laboratory data for patient management.
The Department also has state of the art Blood Bank at Justice K. S. Hegde Charitable Hospital. This is fully air-conditioned, with the component facility, and there are blood storage refrigerators with a storage capacity of over 800 units of blood and blood components. The blood bank contains equipment like Refrigerated centrifuge, component separator, Platelet Agitator, -85° C ultra-low freezer, -40° C plasma freezer for storing single donor plasma, Blood Bag Refrigerators, Laminar Flow, Cryobath, Microplate Washer/Reader, Blood collection monitor and Fresenius Kabi – Comtec cell separator, to prepare single donor platelets using Apheresis Technology. There is a regular blood donation camp in association with service organizations and an exclusive voluntary blood donor registry by the name "Sanjeevini" which contains all the details of the eligible blood donors.
