Workshop on Film Editing

A one-day workshop on Film Editing was organised on 8th October 2025 at the Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO), drawing the enthusiastic participation of 30 undergraduate media students. The session was facilitated by distinguished film editor Mr. Nithin Shetty, renowned for his work in acclaimed Kannada films such as Jeetige, Toby, Su From So and Swati Muttina Male Haniye. His presence brought invaluable industry experience to the classroom, offering students a rare opportunity to engage directly with a practicing professional. The workshop commenced with an introduction to the role of editing in filmmaking, emphasising how rhythm, emotion and storytelling are shaped on the editing table. Mr. Shetty explained various editing techniques such as continuity editing, montage, jump cuts, cross-cutting and match cuts, using popular film sequences to illustrate each method. His explanations were simple yet insightful, making even complex concepts accessible to beginners. A key highlight of the workshop was its hands-on format. Students were divided into groups and given raw footage to assemble using basic editing software. Mr. Shetty personally guided each team, encouraging experimentation while stressing the importance of narrative coherence and pacing. Through this activity, students realised that editing is not just a technical process but a creative decision-making exercise. In the concluding interaction, Mr. Shetty shared anecdotes from his professional journey, offering career advice and encouraging aspiring editors to cultivate patience, discipline and a strong sense of visual timing. Students expressed that the session boosted their confidence in working with editing tools and deepened their appreciation of post-production as an art form. The workshop proved to be highly informative and inspiring, successfully blending theory with practical learning.
