Jul 17, 2023
Nitte Institute of Communication organized a three-day workshop on "Environment and Development Communication" from 17th to 19th July 2023. The workshop was led by Prof K Phaniraj, Retired Professor, Manipal Institute of Technology, MAHE, an expert in the field of development communication, with a focus on environmental and sustainable development issues.
Day 1: Overview of Developmental Economy and Different Models
The first day of the workshop commenced with an in-depth overview of developmental economy and its various models. Prof Phaniraj delved into the concepts of economic growth, sustainable development and the challenges faced in achieving a balance between development and environmental preservation.
Through engaging presentations and interactive discussions, participants explored different developmental models, ranging from traditional economic approaches to more sustainable and inclusive paradigms. The day concluded with a class activity, enabling attendees to analyse case studies and understand the implications of different developmental models on the environment.
Day 2: Madhav Gadgil and Kasturi Rangan Reports on the Western Ghats and PARI Model by P. Sainath
The second day focused on two significant reports concerning the Western Ghats - the Madhav Gadgil Report and the Kasturi Rangan Report. Prof. Phaniraj presented a comprehensive analysis of these reports, which emphasize the conservation of the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats region.
Following discussions on environmental conservation efforts, the workshop proceeded to explore the PARI (People's Archive of Rural India) model developed by acclaimed journalist and rural affairs expert, P. Sainath. Participants were introduced to the power of grassroots journalism in highlighting rural issues, including those related to the environment. Case studies and examples of successful communication through the PARI model inspired attendees to employ effective storytelling in future communication practices. The students were also encouraged to present their ideas on a selected story from the book "Everyone Loves a Good Draught" by P. Sainath.
Day 3: "Nero's Guests" Documentary and Conclusion
On the final day of the workshop, participants viewed the documentary "Nero's Guests," directed by P. Sainath. The documentary shed light on the agrarian crisis in India and its impact on farmers and the environment. Following the screening, Prof. Phaniraj facilitated a thought-provoking discussion, emphasizing the importance of communication in addressing pressing social and environmental challenges.
The workshop concluded with a reflective session, during which the participants shared their key takeaways and insights gained from the three-day event. Prof. Phaniraj delivered the closing address, expressing his appreciation for the participants' active engagement and encouraging them to use their communication skills to effect positive change.
The three-day workshop proved to be a highly informative and inspiring event. Participants were exposed to diverse topics, including developmental economy models, conservation efforts for the Western Ghats, and effective communication strategies through the PARI model.
