FAQ’S for B.Design Course


01. What is a Bachelor of Design (B. Design) program??

B. Design. is an undergraduate program where students learn how to design products, visual and graphic communication and user interface design and user experience (UI/UX) design. The B. Design program focuses on teaching students how to create interfaces that are visually appealing, easy to use and effective at communicating information. It is a mix of art, creativity, practical skills and most importantly about making the world around us look better and function smoothly.

02. What is the duration of the B. Design program?

B. Design is a four-year program.

03. What are the different specializations available within a B. Design program?

Currently, NITTE SAPD is offering specializations in Product Design, Communication Design and UI/ UX design.

04. What are the broad outlines of the B. Design curriculum?

Starting from Fundamentals of Design, Design thinking and History of Design, which is common to all the three specializations, each of these courses will train the students in their respective specializations. There are practical aspects to the courses where students will work in appropriate labs and understand material exploration, model making and problem solving, related to design. The academic curriculum will be further enriched through seminars and workshops by industry experts, field visits and internships. This will give the students exposure to the latest trends in the field.

05. What kind of skills are developed during the B. Design program?

Students will be able to develop ideas, visualize them and execute the ideas as tangible products and real-life projects. A capacity to respond to clients and understand their requirements and respond to those needs with creative and unique solutions will be inculcated. Students also develop a sense of aesthetics that will enhance the beauty and add value to utilitarian aspects of their projects.

06. What kind of projects will I work on during a B. Design program?

Students will explore projects that enhance their design thinking and critical thinking skills. They will be mentored to work on design solutions that include the latest concepts and technologies. With vertical progression of the semesters, the complexity of these projects will increase.

07. How much emphasis is placed on digital design skills in a B. Design program?

Digital skills are an integral part of the curriculum. Depending on the course, digital design skills will be taught.

08. How can I prepare for a B. Design program and make the most of my experience as a student?

Before joining the course, you can use your spare time to learn how to communicate your ideas visually, by drawing objects and people around you. Analyze the design of objects and make notes. Read about art and design history and know more about some of the best designers in India and abroad. However, prior formal training in drawing is not strictly essential, our experienced faculty team will mentor you to express your creative ideas through drawings and sketches once you join our B. Design program.

01. What are the eligibility criteria for admission to a B. Design program?

Candidates must pass 10+2 examination, obtain at least 45% marks (40% in the case of Karnataka candidates belonging to reserved category) in the qualifying examination or passed D.Voc. Stream in the same or allied sector.

02. What should I include in my portfolio for B. Design admissions?

Students can include their best works that showcase their drawing, painting, and visualization skills as well as any creative projects undertaken. If any study or analysis of a particular artist or designer whom the student admires has been undertaken, that can also be included as part of the portfolio.

03. Can I pursue a B. Design program if I don't have a background in design?

Yes, even if you don’t have any background in design, you can apply. All you need is a desire to learn, explore and excel. Our eminent faculty will guide you through the journey.

04. What sets this B. Design program apart from others?

B. Design is an emerging field. In today’s context almost everything we use, visuals, products and services, are designed by design professionals to optimize the experience. Hence there is lot of scope to grow. B. Design program offered by most of the colleges is under humanities, NSAPD is one of the few institutions that offers B. Design program certificate from a technical university.

01. Are internships or practical experiences part of the B. Design program?

Yes. There will be internship opportunities to gain industry experience.

02. Are there opportunities for collaboration with industry professionals or real- world clients?

Yes, during final year projects.

03. How important is networking in the field of design, and does the program offer networking opportunities?

Networking is very important for the future of students. When students do their internships and attend various workshops and seminars, there will be opportunities for network development.

04. What kind of support services are available for students, such as career counselling or academic advising?

Both career counselling and academic mentorship are available at NSAPD. We also have three tier proctor system to monitor academic performance and the well-being of the students.

05. Are there any scholarships or financial aid options available for B. Design students?

Yes, there will be scholarships for students. These are given based on merit and need.

06. Are there any opportunities for interdisciplinary study or collaboration with other departments?

Through the elective subjects offered each semester, students can learn diverse skills, in addition to core subjects.

01. How diverse is the faculty in terms of their backgrounds and expertise?

At NSAPD, we have carefully selected faculty who specialize in particular areas of design, history etc. They bring industry experience as well as academic rigour to the classroom.

02. What kind of facilities and resources does the program offer, such as design studios, labs, or workshops?

Our college has well equipped labs and machinery, like clay and ceramics, woodwork, metal work, computer labs, AR VR labs, laser cutting machines, 3D printers etc. In these labs, students can actualize their projects under the guidance of our highly trained faculty.

01. Can I pursue further education, such as a Master's degree, after completing a B. Design program?

Yes, pursuing a master’s degree program, either in India or abroad, is a possibility students can opt for, to specialize in a niche area of their subject. This will certainly enhance their career prospects.

02. What are the career prospects for graduates with a B. Design degree?

As per a study made on ‘Careers in Design Industry’ in November 2022, the design industry in India is growing at a rate of 23 to 25% annually. India currently needs more than 62,000 designers for the country's industrial, graphic, communication, packaging, and other such industries, out of which only 7000 are available as qualified designers. This shows the opportunities and potential that the design industry in India has.
With the growth of digital media for business growth, social network, e- commerce and virtual gaming industries, there is a rising demand for Interaction and interface designers. Every organization in the industry requires a brand and good design can impact brand value. Students who complete a B. Design program will have employment opportunities in tech companies, corporates, MNCs and various design studios. They can also use their knowledge and skills to become an entrepreneur and start their own studios/businesses. Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) is supporting small scale & medium scale businesses with funding through various initiatives, which may be suitable/beneficial for design graduates. NSAPD is in MOU with the incubation center in Nitte campus to facilitate the students in this transition.

03. Will there be campus placements?

Yes, there will be campus recruitment opportunities.

Options available are:

1. Establish & Start their own practice with acquired knowledge.

2. Join a well-established architectural firm & Top construction companies like Prestige, Brigade, Salarpuria, L&T, Purankara etc., and climb the ladder of success.

3. Joining Government services or statutory undertakings like BDA, BBMP, Town planning department, PWD, CPWD and NGOs.

4. Can Pursue Masters (2 years)to specialize in any of these subjects - Landscape architecture, Sustainable Architecture, Urban design, Habitat design, Construction management, Urban planning, in India or abroad.

5. Can choose the teaching domain and Join as full time faculty (Assistant professor) once you complete a Master degree.

6. If you have good knowledge and writing skills about architecture you can get into Architectural journalism.

Yes. Architecture is a combination of art and science. Science students with PCM combination are eligible for this course (PUC marks will be considered with your NATA score).

You can change your stream like B. Planning or B. Deign in our institute itself.

No, not required.

It is a 5 Years course, inclusive of one semester (16 weeks) Practical training under a registered architect.

The eligibility for admission to 1st year of 5-year B.Arch. Degree program for the academic session 2023-2024 shall be as per CoA (Minimum Standards of Architectural Education) Regulations, 2020.

The eligibility in terms of Regulations, 2020 is as under:

1. No candidate shall be admitted to architecture course unless he has passed an examination at the end of the 10+2 scheme of examination with at least 50%

2. Aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and also at least 50% marks in aggregate of the 10+2 level examination or passed 10+3 Diploma Examination with Mathematics as compulsory subject with at least 50% marks in aggregate.

Candidates may note that no direct lateral admission is allowed at any year/semester/stage of B.Arch. course based on any qualification.

4. Clearing the NATA entrance exam is a must to join the B.Arch Course.

A student to choose architectural stream should fulfill all the below mentioned exam criteria’s:

1. PUC II or 12th pass in science with PCM combination.

2. Passed in Common Entrance Test (CET) or COMED-K (Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka) exams.

3. Passed in The National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) conducted by Council of Architecture.

4. Seat allotment depends on NATA ranking.

Urban planners “architects of cities” are graduates of the Planning program. Urban planning is the process of designing and managing the physical, social, and economic aspects of urban and rural areas in order to improve their quality of life and sustainability.

At Nitte SAPD, Bachelors of planning is a 4 year course with an integrated learning process of practical and theoretical knowledge. In addition to this, a master’s course, M.Plan, is being introduced this year which is of 2 years duration.

After completion of the degree in urban planning, graduates can pursue various career opportunities in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. In our institution, end to end guidance is given on placements and higher studies after students graduate. While pursuing the course students are encouraged to work on multiple live projects and internships which prepare them at a professional level for their future careers.

To succeed in a planning course, students need strong analytical, critical thinking skills, good communication skills, and an ability to work in teams. At Nitte SAPD, we organize various seminars, hands-on workshops, activities and guest lecturers which aid the students to achieve greater heights after completion of the course.

Emerging trends and technologies in urban planning include the use of big data, GIS and other mapping software, autonomous vehicles, green infrastructure, and smart cities technology. At our institute we provide guidance from experts on each of these fields who interact and collaborate with students and professionals and train students on analyzing the data by using GIS, AutoCAD, surveying apps etc. We introduced AI and AR/VR technology to understand and design the urban areas.

Planning course is a multi-dimensional course in which students gain knowledge on various domains like civil engineering, Geo information system, Economics, Geology, Geography, Sociology, Architecture, Environmental, Managements etc. At Nitte SAPD, we have a full-fledged GIS lab, research cell and lecturers from reputed institutes to provide an overall exposure to the students.

Eligibility criteria for B-Plan course:

1. Candidates must pass 10+2 examination with at least 45% marks (40% in case of candidates from the reserved category).

2. The applicants must have attended CET (any state) or Comed-k or JEE paper 2/3 or NATA.

The students could take any of the entrance exams like CET, COMEDK, NATA and IIT- JEE (Engineering, Architecture and Planning) or institution entrance examination IEE conducted at Nitte SAPD.

Prerequisites for taking a planning course is open mind, enthusiasm to learn, and macro level thinking and impact human lives at a large scale.

At Nitte SAPD, our urban planning course, we can expect to work on a range of projects that involve analyzing real-world urban issues, conducting research, developing plans and policies, and presenting recommendations to stakeholders. Projects can include things like designing a transportation network, conducting a neighbourhood analysis, or creating a comprehensive plan for a city or region.

In the planning stream, the students are required to be pragmatic. It allows them to enjoy working with different community interests. The course engenders responsibility to work on social and environmental effects in the communities. They can be change makers. Unless you love the subject the subject will not love you. Planning is a multidisciplinary stream that encompasses Architecture, Engineering, GIS and Remote Sensing, Cultural Community and Sociology, Economics, Geography, Environment and Management. Students can specialize from a large number of branches of studies such as Environmental, Transportation, Infrastructure, Urban, Regional, Rural-Agro, Transportation, Housing, and City as such. More branches of study are forming part of the Planning Programme as the year rolls by.
