Screening of Samudrada Motte - A story of conservation of Olive Ridley Turtles by NIA Alumni, Ar.Sathwik PS
Sep 8, 2025
Date: 8th September, 2025: Samudrada Motte (Ocean's Egg) began as the architecture thesis of Ar. Sathwik PS and grew into an award-winning short film co-created with Ar. Akshay Bhat. The film tells the true story of Babu, an elderly fisherman from Kundapura, Karnataka, who once poached Olive Ridley turtle eggs for survival. After his grandson learned about marine conservation through FSL India's programs, and with support from his family, Dinesh of FSL India, the Karnataka Forest Department, and the local fishing community, Babu transformed into a guardian of the turtles -protecting nests, monitoring temperatures and guiding hatchlings safely to the sea. The film highlights how conservation supports both wildlife and livelihoods while addressing climate change. Samudrada Motte has won international recognition, including awards at the Impact Docs Awards 2025 (USA), Independent Short Awards 2025 (Los Angeles) and the 14th Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival 2024 (New Delhi). It has been screened globally, with its premiere at Bharath Cinemas, Mangalore. The screening was part of the NIA Conversations series, with Prof. Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary as the Chief Guest, who delivered a short talk during the event.
