As part of the NIA Conversations series, Ar. Ragul Ravichandran, founder of Vaayil, A Doorway, delivered a lecture on “Scan the Sacred: Photogrammetry as a Tool for Heritage Preservation” at NIA. He shared his personal journey and the inspiration that led him to pursue the field of heritage documentation and digital preservation. Over the past five years, he has documented more than 194 heritage structures across India - temples, stepwells, tanks, shrines and other endangered sites using a hybrid methodology that combines traditional techniques with advanced digital tools. During the session, he showcased fascinating case studies, including 3D models and scaled prototypes of documented structures, which deeply engaged both students and faculty. He also introduced the audience to various digital techniques and software tools such as photogrammetry, drone mapping and 3D modeling, explaining step-by-step how each is applied and which methods are most suitable for different building types and environments. His work, which has supported initiatives like the UNESCO World Heritage nomination for the Hoysala temples, exemplifies how technology can bridge the gap between tradition and modern conservation practice. The lecture was not only technically insightful but also inspiring, sensitizing students to the importance of preserving cultural heritage through innovative documentation methods.
