Ar. Shreeya Deosant and Ar. Tejendra Nagabhoina, Asst. Professors at NIA recently presented their research paper titled "Urban Heat Island & Roofing Materials: A GIS based Spatiotemporal Analysis of Mangalore city" at the International Conference (ICCRCBM-2023) organized by NITK, Surathkal. The paper focused on studying the impact of urbanization and the use of different roofing materials on the phenomenon of Urban Heat Island (UHI) in the city of Mangalore.

The research was carried out using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools to analyze the spatiotemporal variations of surface temperatures in different regions of the city. The study found that the UHI effect in the city has been increasing over the years due to urbanization and the use of materials such as concrete and asphalt for roofing which absorb & retain more heat.

The paper also suggested alternative roofing materials such as green roofs and cool roofs, which can significantly reduce the UHI effect by reflecting more sunlight and reducing the heat absorbed by buildings. The research was a collaborative effort of the authors, along with the contributions of 5 students of 8th Semester BArch - Suraksha R Rao, Rosemary Florence Joseph, Deborah Angelica Rego, Samyuktha Vivek & Adish K N.
