Oral Medicine and Radiology

Established in the year 1985, the Department Orthodontics and Dento-facial Orthopaedics has been at the forefront in the field of Orthodontics involving itself in imparting quality education and delivering health care of the highest order. Equipped with state of the art physical facilities, modern clinical equipment, and materials, highly experienced faculty, the department offers A to Z treatment modalities available in the field of Orthodontics. The Department is located on the 5th floor of the A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, with a built area of more than 10000 Sq. Ft

Keeping pace with technological advances, the department has been continuously upgrading itself to the use of Digital Technology in diagnosis and treatment planning. The recently installed one of its kind, 3Dimension simulation software along with CBCT soft wares and other recently procured digital gadgets are the major steps in this direction.

The department delivers comprehensive Orthodontic Management of Cleft Lip and Palate cases as well as other Craniofacial Disorders through a team approach. The Cleft Child International (CCI), Switzerland fund the charitable Cleft Lip and Palate Program, which treats more than 1000 cleft cases in a year

The faculty and the PG students are involved extensively in the research, publications, and presentations at National and International forums. CDE and workshops are also conducted regularly. The department has received research grants from external agencies such as ICMR, BRNS and also from Nitte (Deemed to be University).

The social concern of the department is reflected in the services provided at 11 rural centres where PG s and the Faculty are posted on an appointment basis

Under Graduate Training Programme:

The department is divided into the undergraduate and postgraduate sections. An undergraduate student is initially introduced to the basics of Orthodontics through lectures, seminars, and discussions from the 2nd year BDS onwards. The 3rd year and final year students get well acquainted with the Diagnosis and Treatment Planning which is the prime requisite to prepare them towards their success in clinical practice. They are also trained in the clinical management of mild to moderate types of malocclusions.

Highlights of the under graduate training programme:

  • A Faculty is allotted for theory and practical classes
  • ICT and Multimedia Presentations are used extensively for theory classes. This helps in a better understanding of the concepts and at the same time makes learning an enjoyable experience
  • One to one interaction and discussions with the students during Practical classes and clinical postings
  • Practical demonstrations for various techniques and procedures like wire bending, acrylization, finishing, etc
  • The department library has the latest Orthodontic books, Journals & Periodicals for ready reference
  • Personal counselling of students by senior staff members
  • Feedback is regularly obtained from students regarding Teaching and Learning process
  • Formative and Summative assessments followed by the identification of slow learners and advanced learners. Appropriate remedial actions for the respective class of students are initiated

Post Graduate Training Programme:

The PG course in Orthodontics and Dento-facial Orthopaedics was started in the year 1989 affiliated to the Mangalore University. In 1995 it was affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka and since the year 2009, the course is under Nitte, Deemed to be University, Mangalore, Karnataka, India, with an intake of 09 students annually.

Highlights of the Post Graduate Training Programme:

  • Clinical Exposure and Training for the management of a vast number of cases with various types of Dento-facial disorders
  • Custom made Computerized Record maintaining System
  • Use of 2D and 3D Digital Diagnosis and Treatment planning soft wares
  • The training modules comprising of very basic to most advanced Orthodontic Techniques and Mechanics
  • Microteaching modules
  • Moderator system, Structured evaluation, and Feedback for Seminar presentations

Use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT):

The department has embraced the digital age by the extensive use of ICT to streamline the academic, research and clinical activities of the department..

  • Nemoceph 3D (Nemotec, Spain)
  • Nemoceph is a 3D diagnosis and treatment planning software that helps in diagnosis, cephalometric analysis, orthognathic surgical planning and visualisation
  • Abslogger Abslogger is the software used in the department for recording the time of entry, Treatment duration and appointments of all patients
  • Abstraker AbsTraker is a digital software designed with the aim of tracking and retrieving patient data.. Detailed records of successfully treated cases are uploaded to the database for future reference and analysis
  • Romexis Romexis is a 3D software Module used for dental imaging with a wide variety of tools for image viewing, enhancement, measurements, and annotations. Romexis improves the diagnostic value of radiographs and printing, image import and export
  • Digital Patient Records Management System We are currently in the process of converting the physical records and casefiles of patients into their digital equivalent. This would create a centralised database of patient information, help improve workflow management, performance and reduce reliance on antiquated paper systems, reduce the carbon footprint, save space and make the department greener and more eco-friendly
  • Cloud Space for Submission of seminar etc: In order to decrease the amount of paper used, the department has a Cloud Storage Space for submission of all Seminars, Journal Club presentations, Library dissertations, short study, posters and Thesis. This creates a central record for future reference whilst simultaneously moving to a sustainable paperless system
  • Online reporting to the maintenance section All maintenance and check-up requests are lodged online for immediate and prompt response
  • Online feedback on curriculum Feedback from students, staff and subject experts is vital in updating and modernizing our curriculum and increasing teaching and learning efficiency
  • NBrace App The department has launched a mobile based app on Google Play store for the purpose of providing patient information and for answering FAQs
