The Psychiatric (Mental Health) nursing department aims to provide quality education in Mental Health Nursing to Diploma, Undergraduate, and Postgraduate Nursing courses. The department offers Evidence-Based Nursing care for mentally ill patients focusing on promotive, preventive, and rehabilitative aspects. The department conducts research to promote mental health and prevent mental illness in individuals, families, and communities. Faculty and students collaborate with multidisciplinary health teams to carry out mental health promotional activities in the community. The department is committed to providing opportunities for professional growth for students and faculty.

Objectives of the department

  • Develop a positive attitude in the care of mentally ill patients
  • Develop a skill in history taking and Mental Status Examinations
  • Develop therapeutic communication skills
  • Give the highest quality of care by applying a Psychiatric Nursing approach
  • Collaborate and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams in hospitals and communities to promote mental health.
  • Creating awareness of the problems faced by individuals at different developmental stages.
  • Provide preventive, promotive, and rehabilitative care to mentally ill clients in hospitals and communities.

Facilities

Undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students are actively posted in various units of the Department of Psychiatry at Justice K.S. Hegde Charitable Hospital. These include the psychiatric inpatient ward, outpatient department (OPD), de-addiction ward, and KSHEMA Sandhya, a specialized center for geriatric mental health care.

In addition to these in-house facilities, students gain valuable field experience through postings at the Nitte Rural Psychiatric Centre, located in Karkala, Udupi District, Karnataka, which provides exposure to community-based mental health services.

Postgraduate students benefit from advanced clinical exposure through external postings at reputed institutions, including:

  • National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru – offering intensive training in specialized psychiatric services.
  • Snehalaya Psychosocial Rehabilitation Centre, Pavoor, Manjeshwar – focusing on long-term rehabilitation and recovery of individuals with chronic mental illness.
  • Alvas College of Naturopathy & Yogic Sciences, Moodbidri – where students undergo a one-week AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) posting, gaining insights into integrative and alternative approaches in mental health.
These diverse clinical settings offer a comprehensive and well-rounded training experience, equipping students with the skills and knowledge to manage a wide range of psychiatric conditions across different populations and healthcare models.

  • Experiences of the nurses working at psychiatric units in the selected hospitals in Mangalore
  • Effectiveness of simulated de-escalation training for the management of aggressive persons among healthcare professionals at selected hospitals in Mangalore.

  • Dr Nalini M has presented an oral research paper during the International Research Meet organized by Chirayu College of Nursing, Bhopal on 27th September 2024 on Building and sustaining a culture of innovation in nursing research.
  • Mr. Sukesh presented an e-poster titled "Perception of Nurses’ Spirituality and Spiritual Care at the Selected Hospital of Mangalore: A Cross-Sectional Study" at the National Conference 2024 on “Bridging the Gap: Innovating Nursing Education for Excellence in Clinical Practice”, held on October 10th & 11th, 2024.
  • Mrs Prathima Sherigarthy has done an oral presentation for the research paper entitled “A Study on Nomophobia, anxiety and Insomnia among College Students in Selected Degree Colleges in Ullal Taluk, Dakshina Kannada” at the National Conference 2024 on Bridging the Gap: Innovating Nursing Education for Excellence in clinical practice” held on 10th and 11th October 2024.
  • Mrs Jincy K S has presented an oral research paper on the topic “Effectiveness of relaxation and social skill training on school phobia among children” during the International research meet organized by Chirayu college of nursing, Bhopal on 27th september 2024 on Building and sustaining a culture of innovation in nursing research.

Services

The departmental faculty and students actively participate in community extension activities. The department observes World Suicide Prevention Day, World Alzheimer’s Day, and World Mental Health Week every year to create awareness among the general public. Additionally, the department conducts Life Skills Training Programs for first-year students (freshers) and NSS volunteers of the college. Life Skills Training is also extended to high school and college students from the surrounding community.
