Department of Medical Surgical Nursing

The Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing and Nursing Foundation aims to offer comprehensive training to undergraduate and postgraduate students based on the philosophy that students need to be well informed not only in knowledge and skills in basic and advanced nursing procedures but also in the upcoming scientific advances in different areas of clinical practices to enable them to face new challenges and opportunities in various health care settings. This will allow the student to attain competent skills in inpatient care. The department also gives practical training to undergraduate students in the laboratory under simulated conditions before performing in actual hospital settings.

Facilities

Lab Facilities

The college has a well-equipped Nursing Foundation and Medical-surgical nursing lab, which are spacious and well-furnished with advanced mannequins that act as a simulator for practicing basic nursing procedures. A new OSCE lab has been set up with advanced types of equipment like ECG and arrhythmia simulator, defibrillator, and crash Kelly which will help the students to get simulated learning experience in Critical care nursing. The students also get hands-on experience in the Central Skill lab of Nitte University: NU-MEDISIM through simulated clinical experiences and high-fidelity manikins.

Clinical Facilities

The students are given the best clinical exposure at Justice. K.S.Hegde Hospital in all specialty areas. Second-year P.G. students are sent to specialty hospitals like Narayana Hrudayalaya, NIMHANS Bangalore, and B.M. Birla Institute of Cardiology and Research Center Kolkata.

  • Critical Care Nursing – Focus is on evidence-based practices to improve outcomes of critically ill patients.
  • Cardiology – Research explores advancements in prevention, diagnosis, and nursing care of cardiac conditions.
  • Infection Control – Emphasis is on interventions to prevent and control healthcare-associated infections.

  • Effect of Yoga on serum inflammatory biomarkers, psychophysiological, and QOL indicators in Breast cancer patients by Dr Kaini Cecilia, under the guidance of Dr.Prof Fatima D Silva, Principal, NUINS, in August 2024.
  • ‘Multimodal Perioperative Management Programme (MPMP) on postoperative recovery among clients undergoing abdominal surgery,' by Dr. Latha S., under the guidance of Dr. Neetha Kamath, Professor and Head, Department of Community Health Nursing, NUINS, in November 2024.

Extramural Projects

  • Mr. Veeresh Kademani, along with co-investigators Dr. Latha S and Dr. Sujalkumar Shetty, received the NUFR1 grant for the project titled "Effectiveness of Virtual Reality-Based Preoperative Information on Anxiety and Hemodynamics Among Patients Undergoing Coronary Angiography at a Selected Hospital in Mangaluru," with a financial outlay of ₹1,10,000 from Nitte (Deemed to be University).
  • Ms. Merin Mathew, along with co-investigator Dr. Nandakumar U P, has been awarded the NUFR1-funded project titled "Impact of Patient Information Leaflet-Based Education on Self-Care Practices of Cancer Patients Undergoing Radiation Therapy," with a financial grant of ₹20,000.

  • Mr. Veeresh Kademani and Dr. Latha S presented a poster titled "Smart Nursing for Excellence" at the National Conference on Smart Nursing for Excellence: Innovate, Elevate, and Inspire, organized by Dr. M.V. Shetty College of Nursing, Mangalore, Karnataka, on 5th June 2025.

Resource Person

  • Mrs.Cleeta Anline Pinto and Mr.Chethan Naik have been the resource persons for the interdisciplinary skill development program for the dental interns held from 3rd to 5th March 2025.
  • Dr.Latha S. has been a resource person for the industry-sponsored workshop on Empowering nurses for oncology care, organized by Industry academia collaboration, NUINS, Dept of Oncology, JKSHCH, Nitte DU, sponsored by INTAS Oncology, Mangalore, on 10.9.2024, and for the one-day Basic first aid training workshop organized by the Yenepoya Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital on 9.11.2024.

Services

  • Mr. Veeresh Kademani served as an ENLS instructor at Kanachur College of Nursing and Indira College of Nursing, and participated as an observer at Yenepoya College of Nursing.
  • Mrs. Vicky Priya, Lecturer, NUINS, rendered service as a BCLS & ACLS senior instructor at G V Pai Hospital Memorial, Moodabidri, in August 2025 and as ENLS instructor at M.V. Shetty College of Nursing and Athena College of Nursing in July-August 2025.

Other achievements

  • Prof. Dr. Fatima D. Silva, Principal NUINS, was honored with the prestigious Karnataka Women Achievers Award(KWAA) on 13.12.24 at the Dogra Hall, IIT Delhi, for her outstanding contributions to the field of nursing education, leadership, and women's empowerment.
  • Prof Dr. Fatima D. Silva, Principal NUINS, received the Best Researcher award of NUINS from NITTE deemed to be University for the year 2024 and also the Best Paper award from NITTE (Deemed to be University) on 5th September 2024 for the paper "Effect of Yoga Intervention on Inflammatory Biomarkers among Women with Breast Cancer—A Systematic Review."
