International Noise Awareness Day 2026

Apr 29, 2026

International Noise Awareness Day was observed on 29th April 2026, marking the 31st annual global initiative to raise awareness regarding the harmful effects of noise on hearing, health and quality of life.

The Youth Red Cross Unit of Nitte Institute of Speech and Hearing, in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Cell, organized a public awareness program to promote informed understanding of noise and safe listening. The main objective was to assess public opinion and existing awareness regarding noise & its consequences and to provide scientifically accurate information through direct interaction and educational material. The event also aimed to encourage safer listening habits, in line with the World Health Organization’s call for increased awareness and behavior change to prevent hearing damage from unsafe sound exposure.

Members of the public were approached and invited to share their understanding of what constitutes noise, identify common sources of noise in daily life, state how much sound exposure they considered safe, and describe the auditory and non-auditory effects they associated with noise exposure. After listening to their responses, the organizing team provided pamphlets with accurate, concise information on these topics and explained the importance of noise control and safe listening practices.

The activity helped bridge the gap between public perception and evidence-based knowledge. In addition to direct awareness among participants, a video documenting the activity was created for circulation in social media platforms to extend the program's educational reach and support wider community awareness.
