In short, practicing strong study skills helps you to perform better, as you are well prepared. Following are some of the study techniques that one should follow, in order to make your exam days, stress free:

  • Take Notes
We agree to the fact that all of us are very attentive and concentrated during our lectures. We assume that we will remember each and every detail of the subject, being discussed by the Professor. And this is the reason that we do not take down any notes. It’s not important to write down each and every word of the professor, but effective note making helps you retain the lecture for longer. And also when you will refer to the notes during the examination, you will be familiar with the base of the topic. There are many ways to make notes, you just have to choose the best one that fits you. Some of the methods that ensure effective note taking are the outline method; wherein you either draw lines or highlight the relevant content, using a highlighter or a pencil. The other methods can be noting down the relevant keywords that helps you in memorizing the concept; using sticky notes, charts or pictorial presentations etc. Note making is an essential effective study tip, although the method chosen varies from student to student.

  • Active Study Session
Reading is a hobby for many of us. And what better than a way wherein your hobby contributes to be an effective study technique. Merely reading of the subject matter won’t contribute effectively. There is a way to read, which makes sure that you understand quick and retain the matter for long. An effective reading method is the one where you first read and understand the title, then you shift your focus to the contents that have been discussed in the subject and finally the introduction, as it gives you a basic idea of what the entire content is about. While reading, make notes or pointers or highlight the content, so that when you refer it back you are aware of the relevant topics to be covered. This gives you a clear understanding and also it becomes easy to ask questions, while in class or group study.

  • Memorize Effectively
Merely taking notes and reading is not enough, what you really need is to memorize the content effectively. We understand it becomes monotonous and difficult to read the same content repeatedly, hoping to memorize the subject. However, it is not possible to remember everything you read only by maintaining notes and reading. Although a strong way to effectively retain the information is by picturising or conceptualizing the topic or any definition in your mind. Elaborating the thought, the idea is to create a situation in your mind which sinks in with the concept you are trying to memorize. Also one other way to memorize efficiently is to read out loud to yourself. This helps you to actually channelize your thoughts in words and you get more clarity about the content. This will also ensure that you understand the concept quickly and retain it, for your life.

  • Ask Questions
In order to ensure that you are an active learner, not a passive one, try and ask as many questions as you can. This will help you to get a better understanding of the topic being covered by the professor. And also, the professor will know that you are taking interest in the topic. Also, the subject for which you ask questions, helps you to retain the content for longer and becomes easy while preparing for exam. This is an obvious fact that to ask questions, you need to know about the topic. So asking questions lets you have an overall perspective about the topic. You should never hesitate to ask questions, as you don’t know which question can be the one which is an important topic to be covered. At NITTE, we appreciate and encourage students to ask questions and be a part of an interactive lecture.

  • Stress Management
Student’s life is a roller coaster ride of emotions. At times you are happy and excited and at times you feel gloomy and stressed. Stress management plays a very important role in balancing and enhancing your student life. Especially during exams or while studying we tend to take a lot of stress, ending up not preparing for the exams effectively. Stress management and good performance goes hand in hand and are directly proportional to each other. Although, we can’t deny the fact that stress, to an extent, is important to help you perform better. But too much stress can hamper your studies and lower your confidence. There are various ways in which stress can be managed such as, taking regular breaks while studying which will ensure that you keep yourself calm and your mind fresh to take in more information. Also other ways are planning your academic sessions in a way that does not result in piling up to the last moments, or opt for group study. Group study results in effective stress management, as you study with your friends will help you to be light as well as also ensure that you study well.
