Dr. S. Ramananda Shetty, completed his BDS from Government Dental College, Bangalore and MDS (Prosthodontics) from KMC, Manipal.

He started his teaching career in 1977 and joined Government Service in 1978. Thereafter he joined the Government Dental College, Bangalore as teaching faculty and was appointed as its Principal in 2001. Dr. Shetty is in the academia as a teacher, researcher and administrator for the last 35 years.

In recognition of his exceptional work and leadership he was elevated to the post of Director of Medical Education of Karnataka, in 2004. Forward thinking and always ahead of his times, Dr. Shetty infused the much required impetus in the medical education system through administrative changes. He considered the starting of 6 new government medical colleges, 1 government dental College and 3 government nursing colleges during his tenure as Director of Medical Education which is a record by any state government in the country. He has delivered several orations, lectures, key note addresses in the subject of prosthodontics throughout the country.

He was Member of Syndicate in 8 Universities in Karnataka and a Member of Academic Senate of 10 different Universities in the country. In the past 35 years he led several committees and councils constituted by the Government of Karnataka for regulating medical, dental and other health science education in the state. To name a few he was the Chairman of the Karnataka Medical Council, Chairman of the Para Medical Board, Chairman of the Selection Committee for PG and UG candidates for Para Medical Courses, and Member of Karnataka Nursing Council. He was President of Indian Prosthodontic Society, President of Prosthodontic Forum and Member of Dental Council of India. He was also Director in-charge of Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore the second biggest cancer institute in the country, for a short period.

In July 2008, he was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences which position he served till July 2011. He was instrumental in the certification of the University to the international standards ISO/IEC 27001: 2005 for information security management by the British Standards Institution India. He was conferred with the Honorary Doctorate by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences for his outstanding service in the field of Medical Education and Administration.

He was the President of India’s nominee to the Banaras Hindu University to serve till December 2012. Since August 2011, he is appointed as an expert member of dental subcommittee of CSIR -NMITLI Project on Medical implants. In Dr. S Ramananda Shetty, one finds a rare and a happy blend of a persona who is an excellent teacher, an efficient administrator and a compassionate doctor.
He joined Nitte University as the Vice-Chancellor in July 2012.
